Abstract

The last English edition of this book was published in 1930. The new editor has retained the style of the older volumes and has presented the material from the standpoint of both the organic -chemical theory of structure and the physical chemical viewpoint. The opening section is concerned with the general aspects of organic chemistry; there are brief discussions of qualitative and quantitative organic analysis, determination of molecular weights and physical constants, and methods for the separation and identification of organic compounds. The aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic, and heterocyclic compounds are discussed. The book is advertised as a textbook not only for organic chemists but also for students of biology and medicine. Topics of interest to the latter group are mainly treated from the organic viewpoint.
