Abstract

Background and Objectives: Communication ability is essential to self-determination. So augmentative and alternative communication(AAC) is recommended for adults with severe cerebral palsy who are also not able to speak. But only provision of AAC is not enough for adults with cerebral palsy who had not given self-determination opportunity. So, in this study AAC intervention is offered to not only adults with cerebral palsy but also their personal assistants. The purpose of this study is to find the effect of this AAC intervention on the self-determination behaviors of adults of cerebral palsy. Method: Participants are three adults with cerebral palsy and their three personal assistants. AAC intervention is conducted three or four times per week at participant's home. Results: All of participants showed increased self-determination behaviors. Conclusion: This study shows that AAC intervention for adults with cerebral palsy and their personal assistants results in increased self-determination behaviors in personal assistant service situation.
