Abstract

Abstract The aim of the study was to develop a reliable and valid Dutch adaptation of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ; Folkman&Lazarus, 1988) that measures situation-specific coping. The WCQ was translated into Dutch and was completed by 315 subjects. We found no confirmation for the eight factors found by Folkman and Lazarus. In an exploratory factor analysis, seven factors were found and named Problem Solving, Wishful Thinking, Seeking Social Support, Positive Reappraisal, Accepting Responsibility, Avoidance, and Confrontive Coping. On the basis of these factors and a reliability analysis, six scales were constructed. Five scales had many items in common with the corresponding original scales. For the original scales Self Controlling and Confrontive Coping no Dutch counterparts were found. With regard to internal consistency, test-retest reliability and concurrent validity, the scales showed good results.
