Abstract

The well known 3.40 MeV level in Mg25 has been studied by means of the Al27(d, α)Mg25 and the Mg24(d, p)Mg25 reactions. In both reactions the level was resolved into two components, separated by 9 ± 2keV, at 3.407 ± 0.007and3.398 ± 0.007 MeV. In the (d, p) reaction the level at the lower excitation energy was weakly excited indicating that the upper member is the well known 3/2− state. In the (d, α) reaction the reverse was observed, the lower level being consistently the stronger. The relative intensities of the members of the doublet in the (d, α) reaction suggest that the new level in Mg25, at 3.398 ± 0.007 MeV, has spin 9/2 and consequently corresponds to the 3.44 MeV (9/2+) level in the mirror nucleus Al25.
