Abstract

A linear theory of gyrotron travelling wave tubes (gyro-TWTs) is presented in this paper. It is shown that the main features of operation are adequately revealed by considering the interaction between a relativistically corrected fast cyclotron wave of an RK excited electron beam and a TK waveguide mode. The corresponding coupled differential equations lead to a dispersion equation which characterizes the behaviour of the system in a simple and straightforward manner. Numerical solutions of the dispersion equation form the basis of the concluding remarks.
