Abstract
A low-cost dispersion compensating Raman amplifier using standard dispersion compensating fibre (DCF) is proposed, and excellent noise characteristics combined with high gain are experimentally demonstrated. Low cost is achieved employing the simple principle of co-propagating pumping, by using a low number of components, as well as standard DCF as the gain medium. Dividing the DCF into two spans and inserting an isolator in between effectively suppress double Rayleigh backscattering (DRBS). The amplifier is shown to have better noise characteristics than an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA).
