Abstract

A coloured complex formed between thiobarbituric acid and a red blood cell extract is described. The complex appears to be identical with the complex formed between thiobarbituric acid and β-formylpyruvic acid after oxidation of the red cell extract with periodate. The absorption peak of the complex is sufficiently close to the absorption peak of the malonyldialdehyde-thiobarbituric acid complex to be a potential source of error in the study of red cell lipid peroxidation.
