Abstract

An alternative approach to the formulation of unbalanced fault current calculation without using symmetrical components is proposed for inclusion in the power engineering curriculum for undergraduate teaching. With the proposed representation of the system elements in an equivalent admittance matrix and the formulation of the system equation in the phase coordinates for different types of faults, this paper demonstrates in a test network that unbalanced fault currents can be calculated entirely in phase coordinates by solving a set of linear system equations. The calculated results were compared with those obtained using the conventional approach.
