Abstract

Baby E was delivered by Caesarean section at 28 weeks for ecreased foetal movements and intra-uterine growth restricion (IUGR). He had low platelets (22 × 109/L) and his head as more growth restricted than his body. He remained thromocytopenic after a week and cranial ultrasound scan (USS) evealed cerebral calcification. Other abnormalities at birth ncluded ambiguous genitalia and patent ductus arteriosus PDA). A urine, throat swab and plasma from the baby tested posiive for cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA by polymerase chain reaction PCR). Retrospective testing of maternal booking blood confirmed rimary CMV in early pregnancy. Baby E was started on IV ganciclovir (GCV), as there was ufficient evidence to support central nervous system (CNS) nvolvement.
