Abstract

This paper deals with a transparent digital satellite payload concept based on the implementation of digital demultiplexing, narrow-band Digital Beamforming and digital on-board switching. Such a payload architecture has been identified as a valid candidate for the provision of Universal Mobile Telecommunication Services (UMTS) by Medium Altitude Earth and Geostationary Orbit (MEO and GEO) satellites. The paper includes a description and technological issues of the different sub-units that compose the mobile payload and the European Space Agency (ESA) related activities. Emphasis is put on the digital part of the payload (the Payload Processing Unit), and in particular on the digital technology and VLSI considerations for its hardware implementation.
