Abstract

A designed software for scanning tunneling microscopes (STM), in which the feedback loop operation, STM operation control, and reception and storage of measurement results are based on a single desk top computer with a Linux Ubuntu operational system, is described. A commercial-production data acquisition unit (NI-6229) and an analog unit, consisting of five high-voltage amplifiers, a control unit of stepping piezodrives, and a separate tunneling current preamplifier, are additionally used for operation with an STM. The software was used for controlling a low-temperature (4.2 K) STM with a 3D-positioner for roughly selecting the scanning site and has a convenient graphical user interface.
