Abstract

AbstractThis report describes differences in the polarization of the resonance Raman lines at 1317, 1142 and 1012 cm−1 with respect to an exciting wavelength (5730 Å), which is within the long wavelength absorption region, for human normal hemoglobin AA versus sickle cell hemoglobin AS. The evidence indicates that the NCa band region differs in the two hemoglobins. These differences may be related to the differences in dipole moment between normal and sickle cell hemoglobin originally reported by Pauling.1 The usefulness of the resonance Raman technique in providing additional microscopic information in a study of abnormal hemoglobins is discussed.
