Abstract

This paper describes a difference-based variational method for analyzing a general class of two dimensional shell problems, including shells with cutouts. The method is essentially an adaptation of the variational method for setting up difference operators. Results from two example problems are given and the effectiveness of the method is illustrated. Although the method has broader applicability, this work is limited to static linear elastic deformations of thin shells.
