Abstract

Commercial mixed-sex broilers were reared in cages and on the floor on new oak shavings. Diets fed were a basal diet, the basal diet plus 3% by weight of ground litter, and the basal diet plus 3% by weight of ground shavings. The temperature was maintained at 29° C. for the 8-week experiment period.Broilers reared in cages and given the basal diet had significantly lower gizzard weights, when expressed as a percentage of body weight, than the floor-reared broilers given the basal diet. The inclusion of 3% ground litter in the diet resulted in increased gizzard weight, but gizzard weight was not as great as for the floor-reared birds. The cage-reared broilers given the diet with 3% ground shavings had gizzard weights equal to or greater than the floor-reared broilers. Within each treatment, females had significantly higher gizzard weights than the males when expressed as a percentage of body weight.
