Abstract

A functional concept of occlusion has been discussed. The role of a crepitus in the temporomandibular joints and its association with mandibular repositioning in the correction of malocclusions has been described. A concept of neuromuscular automatic closure of the jaw from rest position has been proposed as a criterion of excellent function of the stomatognathic system. It is contended that a person's total neuromuscular potential and his feeling of well-being are enhanced by correction of improper functioning of the stomatognathic system.
