Abstract

MCCARVER, RONALD B. A Developmental Study of the Effect of Organizational Cues on Short-Term Memory. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1972, 43, 13171325. Subjects ranging in age from 5 years to adulthood were given an 8serial position probe-type short-term memory task. Half at each age level were given organizational cues which included instructions as well as temporal and spatial cues supplied during item presentation. An age-related increase in the level of short-term memory was found, which was reflected primarily in the early portions of the serial position curves. The performance of the older subjects (10 years and up) was facilitated by the organizational cues, whereas that of younger subjects was not. The results were discussed in relation to Flavell's (1970) theory of the ontogenesis of memory and similar notions.
