Abstract

A development of the single specimen test method for measurement of fracture toughness using the elastic compliance of the test specimen to establish crack length is described. The method utilises a continuous high frequency (20 Hz), low amplitude (0.01 mm) sinusoidal displacement control signal superimposed on the linear ramp displacement to provide continuous load and displacement cycling. These amplitudes are quantified using the AC component of the output signal to provide a measure of the specimen compliance. Load cycling is effected below the threshold stress intensity for fatigue. A microcomputer based system has been established which allows rapid evaluation of the complete crack growth resistance R- curve .
