Abstract

A method based on the failure assessment diagram is used to determine the safety factor against failure of a cracked structure. The model is shown to be useful also when calculating the failure probability, both with a Weibull (or similar) distribution and with an upper bound formula (Chebyshev inequality). Both the deterministic and the probabilistic approaches are shown to require very simple calculations. Finally, the model is extended to take care of combinations of bending and tension loads.
