It is shown that the velocity of the iron lines at the center of the solar disk can be expressed in terms of the line depth and excitation energy to an accuracy of the order of 0.03 km s-1. There is no evidence of a dependence on wavelength that cannot be explained by the uncertainties of the laboratory frequencies. This result should provide strong constraints for models of the convective motions in the solar photosphere.
