Abstract

In this article, Melvin L. Sharpe describes the embryonic development of Ball State University's doctoral program in public relations. Adhering closely to the recommendations of IPRA's “Model for Public Relations Education for Professional Practice,” rather than on existing curricula, the Ball State program is attempting to move boldly into an instructional mode far beyond the “media relations” orientation of past public relations practice and courses. Toward that end, the program design calls for the establishment of a “Center for Public Relations Education and Research,” an interdisciplinary research unit which will allow faculty from other academic units to share ideas about curriculum, the public relations profession and communication research. Core courses in the doctoral program will have a strong emphasis on preparing future practitioners for a powerful role in management.
