Abstract

Aim of the Study: Nagaland, a northeastern state of India, is characterized by its diverse agro-climatic conditions and rich cultural heritage. Agriculture is the primary livelihood for the majority of its population. This descriptive study delves into the agricultural landscape of Nagaland, focusing on the various schemes and implementations that have been put in place to enhance agricultural productivity and socio-economic development. Design/Methodology: The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative insights gathered from field surveys and interviews with local farmers, government officials, and experts. The primary objectives are to provide a comprehensive overview of the state’s agricultural system and to evaluate the effectiveness of government schemes in promoting sustainable agriculture. Findings: The findings reveal a dynamic agricultural system in Nagaland, where traditional farming practices coexist with modern techniques. The state government has initiated several agricultural schemes to address the challenges faced by farmers, such as land fragmentation, lack of infrastructure, and climate change. These schemes encompass various aspects of agriculture, including horticulture, animal husbandry, organic farming, and marketing. Practical Implications: The study assesses the impact of these schemes on farmers’ livelihoods, income, and agricultural practices. It also explores the challenges and opportunities associated with their implementation, taking into consideration the cultural and geographical diversity within Nagaland. Originality/value: The results of this study can provide valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and development agencies working in the agricultural sector, helping them to better understand the unique agricultural landscape of Nagaland and the effectiveness of various government interventions. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of aligning agricultural development with the state’s cultural diversity and ecological conditions to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth in the region.
