Abstract

Researchers examined the amount and scope of NBC's coverage of men and women competing in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games and compared that coverage to previous years. Male athletes received more prime-time coverage than female athletes did, but by only a relatively small margin. Men involved in individual events received considerably more coverage than female competitors in individual events did, but the overall amount of air time devoted to women's teams was notably higher than the amount of time devoted to men's teams. As has been the case historically, coverage of men's sports involving power or contact was much greater than coverage of women's events involving those characteristics.
