Abstract
A technic for administration of fluids and blood intravenously to small infants during surgical procedures has been described. The success of the method depends upon the non-irritating qualities of a new plastic tubing, polyethylene, in which the whole blood shows delayed clotting. The method is dependable and easily employed, even by inexperienced persons. It has been found useful in over 90 major neurosurgical procedures and is of benefit in the administration of fluids during the postoperative period. Superficial phlebitis occasionally develops but in only one case did it develop when the tubing had been in place less than 24 hours, and in only four cases under 48 hours.
