Abstract

In this paper, a new delta-connected autotransformer based 36-pulse AC-DC converter is proposed to feed direct torque controlled induction motor drives. Parameters and winding arrangements of the autotransformer and interphase reactor are given. Mathematical analysis of the input line current and output voltage is presented. The results show that the proposed converter can eliminate less than 35th harmonics in the supply current, and the equivalent kilovoltampere (kVA) rating of the autotransformer is 0.158Po, where Po is the output power of the load. Simulation results confirm that this topology is capable of suppressing less than 35th harmonics in the supply current. The power factor is also improved to near unity under varying loads. Several power quality indices are presented to compare the performance of 12-, 24- and 36-pulse rectifiers.
