Abstract

A description is given of a proposed experiment to measure the muon electric dipole moment with an uncertainty between 10−24 and 10−25 e-cm, or 5 to 6 orders of magnitude better than the current value. A new method using muons in storage rings would be employed. The method is generally applicable to measuring the EDM of charged particles, particularly if the magnetic moment anomaly is small. At 10−24 e-cm, the muon surpasses the electron EDM-based limits in constraining a number of models beyond the Standard Model, and would be the only foreseeable high precision test for an EDM outside of the first generation of particles.
