Abstract

The paper presents some problems associated with development a knowledge-based system for intelligent guiding the arrangement of internal spaces for ships safety at the preliminary stage of design. The method is based on the probabilistic concept of survivability. The following domains are taken into account when using the method and computational model the hull form, arrangement of internal spaces, geometry of watertight compartments, cargo distribution and permeabilities, centre of gravity and possible loading conditions, scenario of damages, buoyancy in the final stage of each flooding, damage stability, damage stability and dynamical effects and finally, the survivability. Some novel procedures regarding the survivability of ships are presented. A few examples of the risk assessment and ship survivability are shown in the paper. The practical remarks are given.
