Abstract

One bright, sunny morning Two-Deer decided to go hunting. He got up and grabbed his bow and headed off toward the nearest mountain. He walked around the mountain for a couple hours and didn't see anything. It was about noon, and he decided to take a break and eat some lunch he brought along with him. He sat down by a buffalo skull and did not realize it was there. He sat quietly, and he heard some singing far off. He didn't know where it was coming from, so he just sat there and listened. He looked around and realized it was coming from the buffalo skull. Two-Deer put his head down close to the buffalo skull and looked inside. There was a whole tribe of mice that lived in the buffalo skull. They sang their beautiful songs all day long. Two-Deer liked listening to their songs and asked the mice if he could get a little closer. The mice agreed and shrunk his head so Two-Deer could stick his head inside the buffalo skull. The mice told Two-Deer not to fall asleep because he would get a big surprise. But Two-Deer forgot about what the mice had said and went to sleep because the mice's music was so beautiful. When Two-Deer woke up, he could not get his head out of the buffalo skull. It was stuck on Two-Deer's head because he had forgotten all about the mice's warning. Two-Deer ran back to his village and asked his wife to pull off the buffalo skull. She pulled and pulled, but the skull would not budge. She grabbed a hammer and broke it over the skull. The skull came smashing down to the ground. When Two-Deer felt his head, he did not believe what had happened to him. The mice had chewed off all of his hair and now he was not a handsome man anymore. Everybody in the village laughed at him, including his wife. Two-Deer felt bad and ran from the village, never to return again.
