Abstract
The lack of a session to guarantee long-lived service and a function for control over the delivery of real-time streaming data in HTTP was a barrier in supporting a Video-on-Demand (VoD) service over the Internet. Recently, this barrier has been overcome with the introduction of the Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP). This paper presents the design and implementation of an end-to-end DAVIC (Digital Audio-Visual Council)-based VoD system to support the RTSP over the Internet infrastructure. A RTSP client can select VCR-like requests, which are sent in RTSP message format to RTSP-DSM gateway. In RTSP-DSM gateway, the messages are transformed user control commands encapsulated in DSM-CC (Digital Storage Media-Command and Control) format and sent to the server. Upon receipt of transformed commands, the server invokes a CORBA-based DSM-CC service gateway and the media stream pump to actually perform the requested operations. The reply messages from the server are sent to the client in RTSP message format by RTSP-DSM gateway. Our VoD system has successfully completed feasibility via the Movie-on-Demand trials at our department. The main contribution of this work lies in a simple and effective system integration of a CORBA-based DAVIC VoD server and an RTSP-supported VoD client for MPEG transmission over the Internet via the LAN connection.
