Abstract
Hainan Island is one of the most frequently affected regions by typhoons, suffering the most severe disaster losses in China. It is of great significance to investigate the characteristics, patterns, and trends of typhoons in Hainan Island for effective disaster prevention and mitigation. Based on the data from the Tropical Cyclone Data Centre, the China Meteorological Administration and the China Typhoon Network, we selected and extracted typhoons that landed on Hainan Island by capturing their central latitude and longitude information at 6-hour intervals. ArcGIS and mathematical methods are employed to calculate various parameters, including landing location, landing time, wind speed and intensity, moving speed at landfall, transit frequency as well as path length of typhoons across all cities and counties. Consequently, a comprehensive dataset of landing typhoons characteristics in Hainan Island from 1949 to 2022 is established. Compared and verified with other typhoon data sources and historical typhoon records, this dataset has demonstrated high reliability and accuracy, providing more accurate time-scale information and comprehensive data. The dataset can be directly used to analyze the spatio-temporal characteristics of landing typhoons in Hainan Island, and provide valuable data support for assessing typhoon disasters risks at the county and city levels.
