A Databese System of Bridges in Edo City

Abstract

A database system is constructed on the bridges in Edo City (old name of City of Tokyo). The data of bridges during early Edo Era (approx. 17th Century) are included in this database.In the early Edo Era, after the Tokugawa Shogunate is established in the City of Edo, the City of Edo grew and brisked up rapidly. In the city, there are many rivers and canals, and thus many new bridges were built in the city with its growth. It is interesting to survey such bridges in the historical study on the bridge engineering.“The history of Tokyo City, Bridge Edition”, edited by Tokyo City Office in 1939, and old maps printed in the Edo Era are used as the sources of data.The database constructed in this paper shall be a powerful tool which supports the historical study on such bridges.
