Abstract
I/O response is usually the most important constraint on DBMS performance. We propose an intelligent I/O server (I 2OS) to help this situation. The I 2OS is a hardware/software subsystem which is functionally equivalent to a conventional I/O device. The difference is that the I 2OS includes extra hardware and logic to quicken performance. The I 2OS incorporates an expert system for recognizing usage patterns and prefetching the next expected disk pages. Statistics are regularly collected so the I 2OS can learn and adapt to changes in disk access patterns. The I 2OS is transparent to operating systems and transparent to DBMS.
