Abstract
Common data bases are now trumpeted as providing companies deliverance from a variety of information systems maladies. The author presents a down-to-earth manager's perspective of these data bases in answering the basic questions: What is the structure of a data base? What are its potential benefits, and which companies can and cannot secure these benefits? The role of general managers in data-base development is also discussed.
