Abstract

A detailed dynamic model incorporating the vapor dynamics is derived for reactive distillation columns. The modeling equations consist of nonlinear coupled differential and algebraic equations of index two. The open-loop behavior of the DAE model is compared with that of conventional ODE models derived under the assumption of negligible vapor holdup, to illustrate the importance of including the vapor phase dynamics in the combined reaction/separation operation. An output feedback controller is derived on the basis of the DAE model and its superior performance over an analogous controller derived on the basis of the ODE model is demonstrated through simulations.
