Abstract

Abstract A high sensitivity curvature sensor based on single mode-no-core-twisted single mode (SNTS) fiber structure is proposed. The configuration is simply formed by twisting a section of single mode fiber (SMF) in the single mode-no-core-single mode structure. Due to the twist is applied, the cladding mode excited in the SMF can be recoupled into the core. The core modes and cladding modes excited in the same fiber form a Mach-Zehnder interference (MZI) which is sensitive to the curvature change. A high sensitivity of 16.28 nm/m−1 with a good linearity has been achieved in the range of 0.96–1.92 m−1, and the repeatability of the curvature sensor is 3.6 × 10−3 nm/m−1. The temperature sensitivity is 0.03 nm/°C within the temperature range from 30 to 100 °C.
