Abstract

In an interview with Sarah Schulman, recounted in her superlative history of ACT UP New York, Let the Record Show, Larry Kramer considers his longevity. “I'm here to tell this story. I'm the only gay writer who was on the front line—that's still alive—who was on the front line from the very beginning”, he says. “I know where all the bodies are buried—figuratively and metaphorically, no, actually and metaphorically. And that's what propels me, every day—seven days a week.” Schulman adds a wry codicil: “just for the record, when he made these comments he was not ‘the only’ gay writer on the front line who was still alive, but that was Larry”.
