Abstract

Objective To investigate the sleep quality and the prevalence of sleep problems in people aged 18 years or over in Shandong Province.Methods In this survey,23 987 persons aged 18 years or over were sampled from Shandong province by multi-stage cluster random sampling,and 22 664(94.48%)persons completed the survey questionnaires.The sleep quality was measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI),and the total score>7 was defined as having sleep problem.Results The average sleep time wag 7.9±1.4 hours in this sample.The average PSQI total score wag 3.42±3.57.with higher scores in rural people than in urban ones[(3.46±3.61)vs.(3.30±3.43);t=3.03,P<0.01],in females than in males[(3.67±3.79)vs.(3.13±3.26);P<0.01],in people aged 60 years or over (5.27±4.16)than in ones aged 40-59 years(3.63±3.61)and ones aged 18-39 years(2.25±2.61).The prevalence of sleep problems wag 13.18%.,The sleep problem wag positively associated with age,negatively with marital status and educational background(P<0.01).Conclusions Although the prevalence of sleep quality problem in the people aged 18 years or over in Shandong province is lower than that on other countries.the problem is common and can be regarded as a serious mental health problem.
