Abstract
Empathy, the ability to share the feelings of others, can improve relationships, collaborations and professional success. Here I will show that while we witness the actions, sensations and emotions of others, we recruit brain regions involved in our own actions, sensations and emotions. I will refer to this network as the vicarious activation network. I will demonstrate that rats also show signs of distress when they witness the distress of others, and that their cingulate area 24 contains mirror neurons for pain.
