Abstract

In this study, an attempt has been made to modify the Hagen-Poiseuille equation by incorporating the mean flow pore diameter to derive an expression for the water permeability of needlepunched nonwovens based on the model of Lifshutz (INJ Spring, 18–24, 2005). A good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results has been obtained. A multiple regression technique has been employed to quantify the effect of the process parameters, namely feed rate, stroke frequency and depth of needle penetration on permeability characteristics of nonwoven structures. Furthermore, the effect of fabric area density and thickness on the permeability characteristics of nonwoven structures has also been investigated.
