Abstract
In this paper, the relationship between vertical curve length and stopping sight distance, driver eye height and object height, and the characteristics of vehicle headlamps was first analytically derived. The minimum vertical curve length values, as recommended in the current China Road Alignment Design Guide are shown to be inadequate. For crest vertical curve during nighttime operations, such inadequacy may reach as high as 48% when facility is not illuminated. It is suggested that the vertical curve length values in the aforementioned Design Guide be increased.
