Abstract

South Africa's position in the UN Security Council on issues relating to trouble spots such as Myanmar and Zimbabwe appears to be in conflict with its own principles regarding human rights and democratic governance. This has created credibility problems for the country in its powerful position on the council. The article looks at the issues and concludes that the government needs to manage the perceptions about its actions more carefully.
