Abstract

A highway traffic noise simulator is employed to generate statistical descriptions of the A-weigh ted instantaneous sound levels at several observer positions. It is suggested that some kinds of noise impact are more appropriately described by instantaneous criteria than by cumulative criteria. It is shown that if such instantaneous criteria are assumed, one obtains a significantly different evaluation of the relative contributions of different noise sources than would be obtained from an evaluation based upon cumulative criteria. The actual quantification of the relative contributions of different noise sources is quite sensitive to the choice of instantaneous criterion.
