Abstract
The function of the artist in Africa, in keeping with our traditions and needs, demands that the writer, as a public voice, assume a responsibility to reflect public concerns in his writings, and not preoccupy himself with his puny ego. Because in Africa we recognize that art is in the public domain, a sense of social commitment is mandatory for the artist. That commitment demands that the writer pay attention to his craft, that he not burden the public with unfinished or undecipherable works. It also demands that his theme be germane to the concerns of his community.
