Abstract

Although the application of the military model in corrections is not entirely new, it has recently reemerged in the form of correctional bootcamps—a popular method of inflicting harsh punishment and discipline on young offenders. Despite criticisms from scholars, however, correctional bootcamps continue to gain the support of government officials and citizens. Drawing on the work of Michel Foucault, this article explores correctional bootcamps as normalizing institutions. In doing so, the meaning of the military model in corrections is critically examined vis-a-vis other normalizing institutions and disciplinary technologies.
