Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to study and explore the institution of marriage from the feminist perspective. Marriage has always remained a significant topic of debate among the feminists and political thinkers. Feminist believe that marriage only cause pain, suffering and disadvantage for women, as women are considered as the property of their husbands after marriage. This paper provides various examples and evidences from the ancient civilisations, where marriage was mainly considered as the concept of giving birth to biological heirs. The concept of love and attachment did not existed in the institution of marriage. However, feminists have argued and criticised the moral and practical values of marriage. Feminists believe that historical, legal and social inequalities that have prevailed in the societies since very beginning are significant in causing gender inequalities and providing a lower status to women within marriage and society. This paper provides scholarly evidence that shows that marriage remains a significant burden for women as it destroys their natural liberty, freedom and voice.
