Abstract

Vibration damping of an elastic structure can be obtained bybonding a piezoelectric actuator onto the vibrating structure, andby shunting the actuator to a suitable electric resonantcircuit, tuned to the structural eigenmode to be damped. Theachievable damping depends on the particular electric circuitused. In this paper three different electric shunt circuits areanalyzed and their performances are compared. In particular, theoptimal values of the electric components belonging to eachshunt circuit and the corresponding exponential time decay ratesof the free vibrations relevant to the controlled structuraleigenmode are explicitly determined, also taking into account theinherent structural damping. Finally, some experimental resultsare reported, obtained by using two of the shunt circuitsanalyzed, which are in good agreement with the theoreticalpredictions.
