Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan is a book in the field of Quranic exegesis written by Syeikh Muhammad Sa’id bin Umar. The Muslim community has used this book as a reference to understand the meaning of the al-Quran. However, there is a tremendous amount of denunciation done towards the book by the community due to the lack of clear resources in translating verses of al-Quran, which has confused the community on the legality of the translation done in the book. Therefore, this study is important to reveal the reference sources used by the author of the work. This can eliminate public confusion about this work. The research design used is documentation and fieldwork using the subjective approach that employs descriptive and qualitative data. The main objective of this research is to study and detect the original resources of the writer in the Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan, and expressing how the sources are taken from the Quranic verses. The analysis of Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan used the genetic approach which Goldman publicized in studying the origin of the resources. While carrying out the research, the researcher referred to the text from Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan and Tafsir Al-Tha’labi and compared both texts to detect the similarities and differences. The result of the analysis proved that Syeikh Muhammad Sa’id successfully strengthens his interpretation because the contents of the text in Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan are parallel to the references. This study suggests that thorough research be done by the next researcher on all the works referred to by Sheikh Muhammad Said when writing Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan. This is to completely remove the public's doubts about this work.

Organ Donation in Islam: A Search for a Broader Quranic Perspective
  • Aug 16, 2021
  • Religions
  • Tazul Islam

Organ donation is a widely debated issue in Islamic scholarship. Muslim jurists, however, have produced a substantial amount of evidence supporting its legality. Despite this, previous research has revealed that Muslim communities around the world are still wary of organ donation. The main reasons for this attitude are motivational and educational in nature. To address these two problems, the purpose of this research is to look into the Quranic conceptual background, which could help to expand the justification of organ donation in the motivational context. This study investigated the Quranic verses that scholars have cited in their writings on organ donation and transplantation. The theoretical underpinnings for the use of those verses were deduced. Data were collected from 36 studies on organ donation that refer to Quranic verses and examined how those verses were analyzed. This study discovered that a number of Quranic verses were primarily used to justify the permissibility of organ donation, with little effort made to analyze the verses using specific methodologies dedicated to the Quranic texts. As a result, the outcome may not be helpful to solve the current dilemma which is Muslim communities’ reluctance to donate organs. Hence, it is important to explore a broad theoretical framework for organ donation based on the Quran. This study suggests how to bring this new perspective to the subject and overcome the existing problem.

The research was conducted to determine the implementation of non-cognitive diagnostic assessment of the ability to read and write hijaiyah letters and write Al-Quran verses, the results of non-cognitive diagnostic assessment of the ability to write hijaiyah letters and Al-Quran verses of 7th-grade students at SMPN 3 Lembang. The research design used a qualitative approach with a field study method of 305 students in grades 7D-7K with descriptive quantitative data analysis. The results revealed that in conducting the assessment, the teacher compiled an assessment rubric and used the percentage formula to measure the ability to read and write the Quran. Then, in general, the ability to read the Al-Quran of students in grades 7D-7K is categorized as fluent in as many as 148 students (49%), and their ability to write hijaiyah letters and Al-Quran verses is categorized as proficient in as many as 225 students (74%). This study concludes that no students can read the Quran and cannot write hijaiyah letters and Quranic verses. The implication of this study can be used as a basis for making non-cognitive diagnostic assessment instruments of the ability to read and write the Quran for learning preparation within the framework of an independent learning curriculum at all levels, specifically at the junior high school level in PAI subjects.

Healing through Ruqyah and Academic Achievement of Children in Muslim Community
  • Apr 29, 2024
  • Nepal Journal of Multidisciplinary Research
  • Shastha Banu + 2 more

Background: Ruqyah, an Islamic alternative healing practice, involves treating illnesses using Quranic verses and invocations, focusing on the names and attributes of Allah. The literature on the academic performance of Muslim children in Nepal and the use of Ruqyah is limited and requires further exploration. This study aimed to identify the use and practice of Ruqyah in healing children within the Muslim community and assess their academic achievement. Methods: This study explored the issue among the seven participants of four families from Muslim community who undergo Ruqyah often via a descriptive phenomenological method that included in-depth interviews. Three themes emerged from the interview data which offered insight into the Muslim community. Results: Parents found the use of Ruqyah and children's academic achievements reasonable. Muslims respect the Holy Quran as the word of God, using it as guidance for Ruqyah and their children, as they believed it was the right choice. The study found that the family preferences dictated whether to take it immediately or only when needed. Children who followed Ruqyah and supplemented it with modern medications improved health patterns and their academic success. Conclusion: Children who undergo Ruqyah are influenced by their parents' religious knowledge, educational level, and socio-economic background, and are academically prepared. Medications are used, with parents believing that aligning with Ruqyah improves their children's academic performance. Novelty: The study could lead to new therapeutic research directions for the Muslim communities in Nepal, assisting children in coping with illnesses and improving their academic outcomes.

This article aims to discuss the interpretation of the Khilafah as the opposition to secularization of politics according Sayyid Quthb. The proponents of secularism assume that state law cannot be put together with the religious law because of the absence of a relation. In addition, secularism tries to destroy the Khilafah Islamiyyah and the Sultanate of Ottoman Turkey in the 19th while the sultanate was led by Musthofa Kemal who attempts to affect the country and to destroy Islam as religion in the country. Rasullullah as the first khalifah of Islam has shown that a country can be built by following the Qur’an and Sunnah. That can be proven with the formation of the state in Medina and the Medina Charter as the law of this country. Based on this background, the Author Attempts to study thematically the problem of Khilafah in the Qur’an according to Sayyid Quthb in his Tafsir in order to discover how he opposes secularism through proposing his concept of Khilafah. In addition, the Author also uses Socio literature approach to describe sociological aspect of the interpretation of the Qur’an pertaining to the problem of Khilafah. Sayyid Quthb suggested that state law cannot be separated from Islamic law. It was because that appointing man to be a khalifah in the earth has been declared initially before the creating of Adam that has been equipped with the intellect the benefit of which is for scrutinizing all laws of Allah, having been recorded in the verses of Qur’an. This law will help human being to perform their obligations as khilafatu al-ardhi Therefore, if the state keeps the laws of Islam instead of the laws of country, it will cause muslim community keeps away from the sharia and put forward their thought and passion.

Manuscript Designing and Developing the Form and Condition for Integrating the Quran with Acquired Knowledge
  • Jun 1, 2024
  • Islamiyyat
  • Ahmad Bazli Ahmad Hilmi

Integrating Quranic verses with acquired knowledge is necessary, along with knowledge and technology development. This helps in understanding the Quranic verses that are relevant to those fields and further exploring the contents of the Quran more broadly. However, the form of integration of the Quran with aqli knowledge and the conditions for such integration based on the expert agreement have not been highlighted. This study aims to design and develop the integration of Quranic verses with acquired knowledge form and its condition based on the discipline of Quranic exegesis. The study used the three-phase Design and Development Research (DDR) approach, and this paper only discussed the second phase, design and development. The form of the integration and its condition was designed based on the literature review and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) by seven (7) experts in the related field of study. Then, the Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) was used to develop the form and condition. Twelve (12) experts in Quranic exegesis have participated in FDM. Experts’ consensus has been obtained in developing the forms for integrating Quranic verses with acquired knowledge and its conditions. The forms involve eleven items: Discussion of Concept, Discussion of the Quranic Approach, Explanation of function, Explanation of feature, Explanation of process, Explanation of cause and effect, Rational explanation of aspects of language, Explanation of Islamic legislation’s wisdom, Explanation of historiography and geography of the stories in the Quran, Inspirational Innovation by the Quran, Translational Technology from the Quran. The conditions for integrating consist of nine items and the experts emphasise the conditions concerning ethics more than the conditions relating to interpretation content. This study has significant implications for using new methods, namely design and development research. This study also contributes to the Quranic studies itself using quantitative and qualitative studies that combine various methods in one study.

Ideal Practices and Dowry System in the Muslim Communities of Nepal
  • Aug 30, 2023
  • Bouddhik Abhiyan (बौद्धिक अभियान)
  • Chandra Upadhyay

This paper analyzes the ideal practices and the dowry system in Muslim communities in Nepal. Here, the term “ideal practices” refers to a system or set of practices that include the effectiveness of human experience and behavior, including traditions, customs, and social practices prevalent in a community. Muslim communities in Nepal follow their own way of life based on Islamic ideals. Amidst the ideal practices, the dowry system is prevalent among them. However, the system, as practiced in contemporary Muslim society, has been reported as a social and economic barrier. This paper, based on a descriptive research design and a qualitative approach, answers the question of what dowry is for Muslims, how they practice it, and why they socially discard the practice. It uses both secondary and primary data. The secondary data were collected through reviews of published books on Muslims in Nepal, and the literature available in archives and e-resources. Similarly, the primary data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations in Morang and Sunsari districts of Nepal’s Terai. This article also uses local stories to understand the prevalence of the dowry system in the Muslim community. The analysis of various stories indicates that the dowry system is prevalent in the Muslim community due to the fanaticism of the community, superstition, greed, personal intention, social imitation, and level of perception. This research concludes that efforts such as adherence to Islamic ideals against dowry, socialization, awareness, and education can have a positive effect on controlling dowry. The paper contributes to social awareness against the dowry system among Muslims and other communities in Nepal.

  • Zeibeda Sattar + 5 more

Within traditional drug and alcohol (D&A) treatment services, the majority of those accessing support are of white ethnicity, with only a small percentage of people from the British South Asian (BSA) and Muslim community engaging in treatment services. This paper aims to explore perceived barriers to accessing traditional D&A services within the British South Asian and Muslim communities, based on qualitative data from interviews with family members and a practitioner. Qualitative data were obtained via 11 semi-structured interviews involving a practitioner (n = 1), and family and friends (n = 10) of those with historic and current D&A use in the community. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed four themes: (1) awareness of drug and alcohol use in the community, (2) drug and alcohol use as a taboo topic and the impact of admitting use, (3) knowledge of services for treatment, (4) how to increase awareness and accessibility of treatment. There was an increasing awareness of D&A use in the BSA and Muslim community. Despite this, limited conversations and misconceptions around D&A use and recovery led to those using D&A and their family members feeling stigmatised within their community and unable to seek support. This paper concludes by recommending increased communication between the BSA and Muslim communities and D&A treatment services to ensure accessibility of treatment by improving cultural competency.

  • Ayesha Sagheer + 1 more

The Holy Quran has a property to improve both physical and psychological well-being. In Muslim communities, reciting the Holy Quran is highly important and is viewed as a sort of religious treatment. This study was investigated whether reciting a verse of Holy Quran (Verse 11, Surah Zuha) on daily basis brings reduction in stress level by enhancing gratitude among teachers and students. An experimental research design was used to conduct the study. A total of (N=90) voluntary teachers and students were selected by using voluntary response sampling technique. Study was carried out in three phases. Phase 1: At Pre-Assessment level by using the six-item Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ6) and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) were used to assess the participants’ gratitude and stress. Voluntary teachers and students were divided into three groups. Phase 2: Implementation of Quranic Verse and daily blessings journaling assigned to group A for a period of three weeks. Group B was given only verse reading and group C was control group. Phase 3: Post Assessment level by using the (GQ6) and (K10) to see the gratitude and stress in participants. Pre and post testing data were analyzed through SPSS by using the paired sample t-test. Findings revealed the significant results of reading Quranic verse and writing blessings of the day but on control group having no effect. This indicates that verse 11 of Surah Zuha directly linked with gratitude enhancement. The conclusion of this study is that Quran having a positive effect on people mental health.

Qualitative Designs and Methodologies for Business, Management, and Organizational Research
  • Sep 28, 2020
  • Robert P Gephart + 1 more

Qualitative research designs provide future-oriented plans for undertaking research. Designs should describe how to effectively address and answer a specific research question using qualitative data and qualitative analysis techniques. Designs connect research objectives to observations, data, methods, interpretations, and research outcomes. Qualitative research designs focus initially on collecting data to provide a naturalistic view of social phenomena and understand the meaning the social world holds from the point of view of social actors in real settings. The outcomes of qualitative research designs are situated narratives of peoples’ activities in real settings, reasoned explanations of behavior, discoveries of new phenomena, and creating and testing of theories. A three-level framework can be used to describe the layers of qualitative research design and conceptualize its multifaceted nature. Note, however, that qualitative research is a flexible and not fixed process, unlike conventional positivist research designs that are unchanged after data collection commences. Flexibility provides qualitative research with the capacity to alter foci during the research process and make new and emerging discoveries. The first or methods layer of the research design process uses social science methods to rigorously describe organizational phenomena and provide evidence that is useful for explaining phenomena and developing theory. Description is done using empirical research methods for data collection including case studies, interviews, participant observation, ethnography, and collection of texts, records, and documents. The second or methodological layer of research design offers three formal logical strategies to analyze data and address research questions: (a) induction to answer descriptive “what” questions; (b) deduction and hypothesis testing to address theory oriented “why” questions; and (c) abduction to understand questions about what, how, and why phenomena occur. The third or social science paradigm layer of research design is formed by broad social science traditions and approaches that reflect distinct theoretical epistemologies—theories of knowledge—and diverse empirical research practices. These perspectives include positivism, interpretive induction, and interpretive abduction (interpretive science). There are also scholarly research perspectives that reflect on and challenge or seek to change management thinking and practice, rather than producing rigorous empirical research or evidence based findings. These perspectives include critical research, postmodern research, and organization development. Three additional issues are important to future qualitative research designs. First, there is renewed interest in the value of covert research undertaken without the informed consent of participants. Second, there is an ongoing discussion of the best style to use for reporting qualitative research. Third, there are new ways to integrate qualitative and quantitative data. These are needed to better address the interplay of qualitative and quantitative phenomena that are both found in everyday discourse, a phenomenon that has been overlooked.

Thematic trajectory analysis: A temporal method for analysing dynamic qualitative data
  • Jun 25, 2021
  • Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology
  • Leighann Spencer + 3 more

This paper introduces a novel, temporally sensitive analytical method for qualitative researchers, which is simultaneously timely and necessary given increasing recognition of the fundamental role that time plays in organizational life and scholarship. As a result of this recognition, research designs considering temporality have substantially increased over the past decade. However, while methods for qualitative data collection using longitudinal and ‘shortitudinal’ designs, in particular qualitative diary methods, have become increasingly common, analytical methods capable of fully exploiting the temporal nature of such data have lagged behind their quantitative counter‐parts, where we see marked progression in analytical methods and procedures. In this paper, we argue that this lack of progression in approaches for analysing qualitative diary data hinders our knowledge and theoretical development when it comes to incorporating temporality, particularly in the exploration of phenomena at individual‐/micro‐levels, arguably most salient to organizational psychology researchers. We respond to these challenges by introducing a novel, step‐by‐step analytical approach that facilitates rigorous incorporation of temporality into the analysis and theorization of micro‐level, qualitative diary data, termed Thematic Trajectory Analysis (TTA). Practitioner points Existing qualitative analytical methods have limitations when applied to qualitative diary data and have thereby limited the questions that may be explored, and understood, through qualitative data. Offers an alternative, step‐by‐step, analytical approach for researchers and practitioners seeking to understand within‐person changes and dynamism in organizations. Enables the benefits of qualitative diaries to be better exploited by both researchers and practitioners and thereby lead to better understanding of how organizational processes unfold, and in turn, lead to stronger intervention mechanisms. Demonstrates the utility of combing textual and visualized data outputs in understanding complex and dynamic phenomena in organizations.
