Abstract

Almost a decade after first publishing a purported proof of the abc conjecture, the prospects for Shinichi Mochizuki’s work remain unclear. Indeed, Mochizuki’s ideas are still met with puzzlement by many mathematicians. David Michael Roberts examines recent efforts by Peter Scholze and Jacob Stix to resolve the impasse and ponders the ultimate fate of Mochizuki’s proof.
