Abstract
The objective was to explore a new approach to prepare multilayered poly(methyl methacrylate)/polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA/PS/PMMA) foams composed of two polymers with similar foaming window whereas different foaming characteristics. This approach involved a thermal compression of PMMA, PS and PMMA sheets, and a subsequent batch foaming process. To improve the interfacial adhesion, two layers of PS/PMMA blend were prepared via spin-coating of a common solution of PS and PMMA in chloroform onto both sides of the PS sheet. This treatment remarkably widened the foaming window, enabling preparation of multilayer PMMA/PS/PMMA foams with a controllable bimodal cell size distribution. By increasing the concentration of the adhesive, the gas desorption coefficient was adjusted, the expansion ratio was increased, and the cell sizes within two layers were successfully tuned. This study suggests an effective and convenient approach for preparing multilayered foams with bimodal cell size distribution.
