Abstract

This article describes the first author's graduate work and dissertation which fell in a crack in time, that period where her institution moved from nearly an exclusive use of quantitative approaches to an awareness and acceptance of both qualitative and quantitative strategies. To be a student during the transition was to be in a very confusing situation. Yet, such a crack in time is probably not at all unusual, in fact it may be universal. Presented as a confessional tale (Van Maanen, 1988), the narrative centers on the student's research autobiography which includes reflections on her development as a researcher prior to graduate school, during her graduate program, and through her dissertation study. The curriculum and experiences that introduced the first author to research were not balanced in the presentation of alternative paradigms for inquiry. The article concludes with implications for graduate students and faculty, especially those who may be in a similar crack and want to speed the crossing.
