Abstract

The elastic pion deuteron scattering is studied in a fully covariant theory in which special attention is given to the treatment of inelastic unitarity. From a study of the box diagram singularities, the leading contributions are found to come from the impulse graphs, i.e. the two-pion exchange in the t-channel and the nucleon-nucleon and the pion-nucleon-nucleon intermediate states in the s-channel. The πNN state is approximated by an NN ∗ state and the instability of N ∗ is taken into account. The correction terms are due to the binding, multiple scattering and absorption processes. These effects have been calculated and dispersion relations for the partial wave amplitudes are used. A detailed comparison with experiments for pion energy in the lab system at 85, 142, 300 and 330 MeV shows an excellent agreement.
